Steering Damper question

Post by Staylor126 »

Hi, I found some previous posts about steering dampers and where to find a replacement. Most of them are older posts. Mdina shows no stock. Does anyone have any source they could share? Have the bracket so it’s just to replace the now notchy feeling strut. To be honest, I had not noticed any issue with it when riding but had taken it off to repaint the bracket. Could be it feels notchy off the bike and is just as it should be when fitted when acting with the fork yoke movement? Plan is just refit it if it’s one of those rare as hens teeth items.

Or put it away and ride without?

A Morini doesn’t really need a steering damper and I suspect they were fitted more for fashion reasons than anything else.

In my opinion, given this, fitting a modern aftermarket damper is unnecessary.

The look of a sport with one is quite unique part of its character though.

I’m not aware of a supply of the originals and they are not really rebuildable (well, I’ve never seen a convincing method)

What I have done on my bikes is Paul Compton’s trick of drilling a small hole at the lowest point so that all the oil drains out. You then have a damper which doesn’t function but looks the part. An occasional spray of lube keeps it running smooth.

Yeah I’m not going to have originality anxiety if I don’t put it back on. Might just keep an eye out and if I find a reasonably priced replacement, then it’s meant to be. If I can’t find one or forget to add to my list of things I’m on the lookout for I know I’m probably not going to miss it.

I remove steering dampers when fitted to any bike I have owned. I think it is a bodge for handling issues.
Chairs are an exception of course.
