My 250 2C had been stood around for few years and the older guy who owned it said it was only used very occasionally for a short local run around. It only had around 24k on the clock and looked like it had been well cared for I gave it a service and went for a Ride Out to the coast with a group of friends which caused huge amusement by leaving a haze of blue smoke behind me all day. It also used to blow oil out of the breather on motorway/dual carriage ways. As it ran so well, I decided to ignore it and investigate over the winter, but over the next few hundred miles of pretty hard use trying to keep up with people on bikes 40 years younger, the problem disappeared. A sticky ring, glazed bores, who knows, but I've had similar experiences on old cars, and there's a lot to be said for an Italian tune up.
