Front fork oil check

Happy New Year one and all.
Having just changed the oil seals on the front forks of my daughter's Honda 400/4 my thoughts turned to my 3 1/2 and thought that I might change the fork oil.
The Blue book is rather short of detail and I do not know what the socket on the head of the forks is for.
I am reluctant to put a spanner on the large hex nut, as I have just done on the Honda, until I know.
Can any one tell me and/or provide a diagram of the fork top please?

Micheal, I think you might be referring to the one-way/bleed valve that is inside the top nut. If so, the earlier fork top nuts had a 10mm hex socket to unscrew them and the later type had a male hexagon of about 30/32mm for a socket.
The earlier type had a small slotted head screw in the bottom of the 10mm hex socket, and the later type has an approx 4mm hex socket. If you want to take them out for cleaning it's simple but often a bit stuck with crud and corrosion. You'll then find a small spring and a ball underneath.
You don't have to take them out to remove the top cap nut when just changing/replenishing oil. There isn't a damper rod like on some forks connected to the top nuts, so quite simple.

Hi Michael I wonder if you have got round to doing your fork seals yet. My left leg has an oil leak that has suddenly got worse and I wonder what you used to push the seals into the stanchions. The Marzochi manual mentions a special press tool but I am hoping I can just use a large socket like I have done on my Japanese and British forks.

Can I put in a 'plug' for a 'fork oil seal removing tool?
The alloy at the slider tops is rather thin and can easily break/chip if you aren't very careful. I use one like this.

I did and used one of my myriad socket as a driver. I recall that the job was quick and easy.. We did my daughter's Honda 400/4 at the same time.
While back now and my brain does not recall too well!
