frame & engine number

my engine number and frame number are the same.the engine has the letter A stamped on the lower left hand side. the engine number is 14480
.does the letter A mean its a strada engine? its a 1978 model it is dressed as a sport.is that wrong the frame number is on the log box but not the engine number :?:please let me know ASAP .thanks dougi

14480 is correct for a 1978 bike. The frame should have A3/14480 stamped on it behind the engine.

Not sure what the A on the engine indicates.

Nice that you have the original engine! Me too!

I don't think you can tell if it's a Sport or Strada from the frame number. Was it originally registered in the UK? An original UK Sport (like mine!

) has an 'S' stamped on the casing below the base of the fwd cylinder, but even that isn't foolproof 'cos some UK Sports don't have it.

Does the standard Sport camshaft have an 'S' on it? I dunno.

Maybe if you can find out some of the history of the bike you might be able to tell if it's a Sport. Failing that, it's a Sport. Tell 'em to prove it isn't!

on the log book.. date of registration 18-09-1978. date of first registration in the uk 18-09-1978. i dont know about the camshaft its still in the engine

thanks for the info yes there is A3 with the frame number and there is the letter S on the right hand side front cylinder ( as you sit on the bike). when i said asap i only needed to know it is a sport asap and it is

Just out of interest,the Sport camshaft does have an 'S' stamped half way along it,don't mean to put a damper on things, but its pretty easy for someone to stamp an 'S' on the soft alloy of the front cylinder...a mate of mine bought what he was assured was a 'genuine Sport',it was only when he stripped the motor down after his mains collapsed that he found out that it was'nt.Having said that ,it was still pretty quick,he never had any complaints about the performance.

i have a 78 strada, A3 14137, has A stamped on the crankcase below the front cylinder. morini club NL has a good link to engine/frame numbers, early stradas should have A stamped on the engine, certain stradas have S stamped but these were mainly for the italian market.

i have been thinking about the letter A stamped on the crankcase on the front,lower edge,left hand side (as you sit on the bike).it looks like it could have been stamped on by morini while casting the crankcases to mark a set of crankcases with a modification in the design from the earlyer run of casting crankcases.i am not an engineer so i could be wrong.

Or, it could have been a Sport with a Strada cam, or a Sport cam that had never been stamped, etc etc

Things weren't so rigorously controlled in those days!
