Another project wont start well and is kicking back...

Post by tobydmv »

Alrighty then, brought home another late model 350 a few weeks back. No title so not sure of the year, but not too bad all in all and will turn over. But, the timing belt was broken. So I cleaned up the heads and everything looks fine. I put a new timing belt on and thought I timed it correctly. So I checked and the static timing marks are not lining up..not off by much, maybe 5d. The bike will start and run just a little bit here and there with some starting fluid sprayed in.. but is very sporadic and hard to start. Also, the kick start lever is kicking back at me so I feel like the timing is off. So I could use a little help from you guys cause I am no good at timing. Here's what I did and all from the right side of the bike, staring at the mag wheel.

1. Found TDC @ Front cylinder by indicator in plug hole. Verified by timing mark on belt pulley and rotor fitted back onto crank.
2. Set valve lash to 1mm
3. Turned cam pully CW until exhaust started to close and intake just started to open and was closing the 1mm gap, pushrod was tight under rocker.(Note with 1mm clearnace the cam snaps forward into a resting position right at this spot)
4. Fitted timing degree wheel and indicator, set to TDC 0.
5. Turned crank pully CCW 12d by using soft jaws (old belt and vice grips very gently)
6. Fiddled with belt and both pulleys, slight adjustments were made until belt fit.
**Note the belt was not a perfect fit there and slight adjustments were made. The manual mentions removing the crank pulley and rotating to a diff key way until fitment. Might try that but why is the static timing mark so far off?

still editing

Here's a good one and self sorted(for now). So re read the manual, and it says if you didnt disturb either cam or crank pulley no need to reset the timing. So I pulled the belt, lined up the pulley marks and put the belt back on. The bike started right up of course. Weird part is the pickup rotor is completely backwards from what the book shows. The book says the rotor open side should be pointing towards the back of the bike. Mines points towards the front. The static timing marks now line up, but on the top pickup or right one, instead of the bottom which the book shows, I think.... does this make sense? Bike runs now so not sure what happened....Maybe the rotor on the cam is indexed upside down so the PO just flipped the wires around?

My guess is that you installed the pickup rotor using the cam timing marks.

You should be at TDC on the compression stroke of the front cylinder. The camshaft pulley mark would be at the 6 O'clock position and hidden behind the flywheel.
