gearbox issue. help

Post by benshannon »

The last two times i have been out riding i have had an issue with my gears. Not for the whole ride, just here and there, but enough to worry me. So, every now and then when i change down, the lever doesn't spring back up and sometimes it wasn't really engaging the gear properly. Only on changing down.

any one have an idea what could be causing this? I look forward to your help.

thanks

Hi Ben, sorry I didn't reply to your message yet! Ref the gearchange, is yours a crossover linkage type? They can get a bit flakey with wear and corrosion or dirt etc. If it was an internal spring or suchlike I would think the problem would be more consistent. Also if you have the Tarozzi type rearsets I have known them to vibrate themselves a bit loose on the locking ringnut which then binds on the pedal pivot. Hard to describe but easier to see when stripped down.

Hey Steve, no worries mate. Hmm, how do I know if it's a crossover linkage?

If the bike has a left foot gearchange it's a cross over linkage

More information needed!

Is your gear lever mounted directly onto the selector shaft or via a linkage?

Does the fault occour with the engine cold, or only hot?

It is all gears, or only some?

It sounds like somthing is binding, but you need to find out if it's external to the engine or internal.

My output shaft had no end clearance from the factory and
would start to bind when the bike got hot.

I've also had the issue with the tarrozzis.of course that was
after I'd torn down and rebuilt the motor to fix the binding issue....

The gear lever is on a shaft. it happened a fair while into the journey so definately not cold issue. cant tell which gears exactly, just upon changing down.

if its just started to happen since the bike has been put back on the road , it may well be a weak or broken return spring , more noticeable going down the box , have you adjusted the drive chain to the back wheel recently if its to tight it can make the box feel ropey, check clutch cable and activating arm is all ok and moving as it should , the clutch could be dragging a bit and making the gear changes not so smooth, difficult say without seeing and riding it , check the obvious first.
