Flywheel questions

Post by Tom »

Hi morinisti di Angleterre

I have a question for you:

Are flywheels of different morini models interchangable?

I am asking because i have a charging problem with my 3 1/2 sport from 1977, the alternator has been rebuilt and worked OK, even with a 60/65 watts Halogen head lighted installed i now know, oeps.
But since this summer I am having recharging problems during long trips. The other day when i made a short trip (35 km back and forth) the battery was fully charged, last week i came back from a 150 km trip, the battery was fully flat. So i swapped the regulator, checked all the earth connections and wiring, and noticed a melted connection on the red and brown wire at the ignition switch. Any clues?

I now swapped the flywheel, to check if it is magnet problem, for a item from a kanguro or camel, they look the same and fit OK, is this advisable?

Best Regards,

Tom

There is an early narrow flywheel with fully machined finish and flush magnets and a later wider type with cast finish and salient poles (with or without starter drum).

The narrow type may foul a wide stator and damage it.

The brown wire is the feed from the ignition switch that turns the regulator on.

Thanks again!

It could also be the faulty connection of the brown and red wiring at the ignition switch due to an earlier problem with a faulty battery which fried my old altenator, hence the rebuilding of it...
So restoring the wiring could simply solve my charging, eh the morini charching problems... hopefully
