Fitting clip-ons

Post by morteach »

I've acquired a set of the original clip-ons for my sport. Am I right that they can be fitted simply by undoing the yoke nut and clamps and sliding on from above or do the fork legs need to be dropped out? Hoping for the quick fix!

Well I just fitted some to mine by undoing the yoke clamp bolts (top and bottom) , knocking the forklegs down (with a rubber mallet) a couple of inches (enough clearance to slip them in between the fork tops and the top yoke) then using a ratchet strap between the wheelrim and the bottom yoke to pull them back up through the top yoke again.
Saves disturbing the head races, only took ten minutes tops

Sounds a quick and simple solution - why didn't I think of it! I take it you left the wheel in place and tapped both legs down together?

Yes both together, helps to have someone else to weigh the bike down at the back rocking it back on the centre stand, then gently tap away with a rubber mallet on the axle ends, alternating to keep the forks roughly level. Unless u get them massively uneven it comes down fine. The real trick is to use the small ratchet strap to pull them back up, as trying to knock them back the same way with the mallet isn't going to get you very far  :D

I've used the car-jack under the frame or crankcases to hold up the front end before, with a short piece of plank to bear the weight, of course. Useful when working alone or wife weighs too little.

Hi, where did you get your clip-ons from? I am looking to replace the K2 clipons fitted to my 77 import with the correct style of sport clipon, seen them in different places, but not sure which are best value looks etc. :?
