Tyre pressures?

Post by Parker3865 »

Settle down on your comfy chair, get yourself a drink......another post about tyres!
What tyre pressures are people using ? I have got Continental ContiGo tyres fitted, stock sizes. Bought as they were the right size, in stock and tubed tyres. I have tried them at the pressures in the owners book, but am finding a wobbly feeling at speed. e.g. Ride at speed in a straight lilne and wobble your handlebars. Does the rear feel a bit weavy? Mine does. Have been increasing the pressures to try and reduce it, but not much difference.
Standard rear pressure for the rear is 2.0 bar (about 29psi). Should I go as high as the for 2 people pressure of 2.5 bar (about 36 psi)?
Is it pressure or have I bought the wrong tyres?

In the good old times of the Avon Roadrunner, if I rememer it well, I put about 1,9 bar in the front. later with BT45 for example I raised the pressure. Now with Conti Classic Attack (with tubes of course) it´s 2,2 -2,3 more or less on the two wheels (maybe a bit more on the rear). Nearly allways driving alone but often with some luggage (I myself naked about 72-75 kg  )
I notice it immediatley when the front has less than 2 bar.

Did you had a look if the tires are well settled on the rims. The Classic Attack for example often need an enormous pressure to settle right.

Just to check what are your sizes?
We have 2 250s
One has Avon roadrider ii 90/90 front 100/90 rear, pressures 29, 32
One has Metzeler Me22 2.75 front 3.25 rear
Same pressures.
Sebac shocks on one on middle
Marzocchi on the other on 2nd lowest

Neither weave at speed.

Horrible hammering and weave above 60mph when front t yre wasnt seated correctly worth a check

Avons are a bit of a squeeze to use as clearances are tight.

ContiGos are 2.75x18 front and 3.00x18 rear. Both are seated correctly. Standard forks, marzocchi on the rear, a little longer than standard. Avons seem to be unobtainable now and wasn't sure about tubes in Metzler as the standard sizes seem to be tubeless. I will double check torque on swinging arm and rear wheel spindle.

Modern tyres need higher pressures. Ignore any advice in the original manual. On my 350 I inflate to 32/36 as recommended by Avon.

Did Continental recommend pressures?

To add to the mix, Bridgestone recommended 33/36psi

Remember that these days Morinis are very light bikes and I found that using tyre manufacturers recommended pressures are sometimes a bit high.
I've found the front to be more critical and a 2psi change either way can make a big difference.
Also check the the wheel balamce with new tyres fitted.

I hated my new Metzeler tyres until I dropped the psi back to Morini recommended pressures, then worked from there and now they feel great.

Good luck

250 user manual was 1.7 bar front, 2.0 rear which is 24 PSI and 29 PSI, this is far too low for today's tyres

Consensus for the very light 250 is minimum 29 front and 32 to 36 rear and increase from there as needed.

It is not just materials, but the construction is different, too. I never used to have trouble changing a tyre, now I have trouble breaking the bead and getting tyre levers to pull the bead over the rim.

You used to get Tubed and Tubeless versions of the same tyre/size but now they are all the Tubeless versions?

It was all tubeless when I were a lad, yes the tyres are tubeless so need a good seal on a tubeless rim
