WARNING WHILST REFUELLING

Post by DaveH »

I thought I'd post this in case it saves anyone else heartache.

Went to refuel the Morini a couple of days ago with BP's finest...trouble is the pump cut off didn't !!
The orifice of the tank is so small that fuel sprayed out of the small clearance around the nozzle at VERY high pressure all over me, the bike etc.

Quicly mopped it up off the bike and where it had pooled on the instruments.

By the time I'd come back out from paying the following had happened

The fuel had cracked the plastic covering both bits of the dial...

Anyone know if its possible to get em refurbished ???

if its just the acrylic covers on the speedo and lcd (assuming it is a cover on the lcd part) you can make a template of the broken bits and either use some 2 or 3mm lexan or you can get some ordinary glass heat treated (after it has been cut to shape) and you'll then have a tempered glass dial which will stop that happening again.

If you send me the templates i can get some tempered glass cut for you, takes about a fortnight.

I'm asssuming that the case splits and the top plastic frame wil have the two portions of cracked covers.

Refitting would just be some clear or black silicone sealant, which is where the tempered glass option becomes better as you can use a solvent to clean the glass.

the other option with the glass is to use non reflective picture glass which stops the glare to a certain extent when the sun hits the glass. Old boxer twins used to have this type of glass on the dials.

Tom...thanks for this ...well impressed !!!

I've got chance to start work on the bike tomorrow so will try and split the instrument case and let you know.

The cover on the LCD part is just a plastic sheet set above the LCD screen itself.

Will be looking for the cause of the stalling problem as well so I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again.. :D :D

Got the clocks off and managed to separate the two halves.

The clear plastic bit is all in one piece with the rev counter bit being convex to accomodate the needle.

Looks a bit too complicated to manufacture and aftermarket solution.

I have emailed the factory who made the clocks to ask for help but they haven't got back to me yet...

if you don't get a reply from the factory, you can bend clear lexan, acrylic , perspex by using gentle heat and a former (i.e heat the lexan etc using hot water or a heat gun using something like a smooth football , bowls ball etc to get the right concave, convex shape and then cut the large sheet down to size once the correct form is produced).

Glass can be formed to shape as well , but would be more expensive.

With lexan , acrylic etc the surfaces would need to be protected with a cloth whilst forming the shape to stop marking of the material.

Since you would be forming very thin plastic material it would be easy to practice on a cheap offcut to get it right.

You could make a mould by using some finish plaster poured into a tupperware container and greasing the original shape so that it doesn't bond. i.e repair the broken section to make the former.
