Polished pipes, a 3X speciality!!

Post by Andy R »

Before I picked up the 08 Veloce from 3X, I thought that the down pipes rather let the rest of the bike down. 3X offered to get them polished by a local guy. Er wow. Mirror polished to reveal some scary bloke's reflection, oh that was me.....
Well impressed with it, looks like it should have done when it left the factory (IMHO).

Speak to either Adey or Mark at 3X.

Delighted of Bournemouth; no I don't work there, this isn't an ad, I'm just an impressed customer!

i noticed the pipes on the corsaro do polish up nicely ,but those on the 9.5 seem to be of a poorer quality stainless which leads to them tarnishing to the yucky brown a lot quicker.
Had a 9.5 set, all polished a while back ,leave them and they just dull , and that's off the bike.

Was thinking about getting my pipes polished also. How are they holding up? Is it something that you have to keep on top of? I ride my bike in all weather so am worried that it will tarnish again quickly.

it's the quality of the metal and grade of stainless used. A 9.5 set polished up fine but went brown with surface rust due the the impurites in the metal, and that was with them just lying in the shed after a fortnight..

Just like you can take a magnet to some stainless and it grips as it is not pure due to the iron content.
The corsaro pipes seem to be a better quality of stainless although they still go brown.

Try a magnet on the pipes to see what the iron content is. :?

Unfortunately the bike has been at 3X since, having a cracked petrol tank sorted, so I don't know how it will keep in use. However; having owned Buell XB's the difference is that the initial external surface roughness of the stainless is not good. The first time you try to polish the whole system takes hours, the second time may take an hour or so, from then on it's far easier/quicker to get an acceptable shine in a short time. My point was that I felt that the initial finish of the pipes was the only thing that let the bike down. 3X got the initial hard work done, from now it's as easy to clean as I want it to be. Yes, it will go a light (shiny) brown but at least it doesn't look as rough as..........

On the good news, bike is ready today, so now I get to play.

I was always under the impression that the exhaust system on the Corsaro was made of titanium not stainless, this would explain the quality of finish (compare them to a titanium system on a MotoGP bike).
Even a relatively low grade S/S such as #304 shouldn't tarnish a easily as the pipes on my Veloce do.
I can't imagine anyone producing a motorcycle exhaust system of less than #316 S/S.
Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
