Top Of The Pops.

Many of us will have enjoyed watching Top Of The Pops back in the 1970's. One fondly remembered show was the one which featured both 'Motor Bikin'' by Chris Spedding and 'Funky Moped' by Jasper Carrott. Two of the best songs in the entire history of popular music, I'm sure you will agree.

I am reliably informed that that particular show hasn't been seen on the BBC since it was first broadcast on 28th August 1975. Well, the good news is that it is going to be shown tomorrow night (24th January 2024) on BBC 4 at 9:05pm. Hurrah!

Some of you may be concerned that it clashes with The Traitors final. Well, fear ye not. If you can avoid hearing the result over the weekend, The Traitors final will be shown next Monday (27th January) at 9:05pm on BBC 3. Again hurrah!

And why am I telling you all this?.. Because you need to know...

Hi Jen, I will be watching. On these long cold winter nights check out that great band The Rezillos doing ‘Top of The Pops’ on TOTPs. Also on another weeks show their hit ‘Motorbike Beat’. Pity they’re sat on a Superdream but hey ho people bought em. On a similar motorcycle theme look up (YouTube).
BSA - Steve Gibbons Band
Just For Kicks - Mike Sarne
Motorcycle - Tico and The Triumphs ( incidentally written and sung by Paul Simon in his early days )
Shes a Bad Motorcycle - The Crestones
Black Shadow - Vince Ray’s Loser Machine.
Vincent Black Lightning 1952 - Richard Thompson
Motorcycle Song - Arlo Guthrie

There’s a few to keep you going.
Keep on Rocking !
Steve.

As an aside to above post. The male vocalist in The Rezillo’s, Eugene Reynolds, real name Alan Forbes, was an Indian motorcycle fan and owner ( real classic ones ), who founded Motolux in Edinburgh, specialising in restoring, selling and repairing old Indians. Rock n Roll and motorbikes have always gone together.

Thanks Steve.

I've only heard a couple of those songs before, ( Mike Sarne and Richard Thompson ), so I'll have to check out the other ones.

Enjoy the show tonight.

Jenny.

Yes you are correct, all great tunes. I come from a greaser, rock n roll, rockabilly background so my picks are mostly that way inclined. Perhaps you have a more heavy metal history ? So try another one “ My Little Sisters Gotta Motorbike “ by Crazy Cavan and the Rhythm Rockers.

I don’t know if this post will ride on into the distance but here’s three that are my favourite riding anthems:

The Other Kind-Steve Earle
Roll Me Away-Bob Seger
Take the Long Way Home-Supertramp (not really about riding but it works for me!
