definitely 400cc. Bore is 66mm, barrels have Gilardoni cast on them, and they're square finned, matching the finning on the heads (had to take the engine out to fit the barrels). The pistons have a complete perimeter with a circular combustion chamber casting; into this there are two machined cutawa...

My rough measurements of the valve sizes for my 350 heads is 31mm inlet and 23 mm exhaust which suggests that the 400 had the same heads & valves as 350s. In addition, the 400cc pistons have a full circle top rim unlike the 350 pistons with their cutaways. Bigger valves would need the pistons ma...

I had problems with my Sport in the past. I had mounted the caliper so that it was behind the fork leg (which meant the brake hose went DOWN before it went up) and the brake light switch was in a T piece connector under the bottom yoke. I replaced the master cylinder with one that had a built-in bra...

Cassington Bike Night

It's a bit last minute but tomorrow is Cassington Bike Night one of the biggest informal get togethers for bikes. So far I know of three 350s, including mine, which will be there.

It would be good if we all gathered in the same place.

Kanguro X3 mouldings

Dos anyone have moulds for the bodywork? I have an '89 X3 without sidepanels and damaged/fragile headlamp & taillight mouldings. It would look good to have the right panels in place.

400 Darts

MY understanding is that most 400cc Darts were aimed at the German market and although bigger capacity had smaller valves to limit the power as well as a softer cam. What size are the valves? I have a 400cc engine with standard Sport/Strada bottom end and 66mm bore Gilardoni barrels. I don't know wh...

Stored Batteries

I just checked two batteries which have been off bikes for a couple of years and found that the electrolyte is down by a half! Sure water evaporates over time but batteries are closed boxes with only a small ventilation opening and isn't sulphuric acid hydroscopic? Are these batteries still usable? ...

The club will not be ordering another batch of tank & side panel badges due the high cost of the minimum order quantity. I regret having to say this, but we are a small club and cannot justify tying up cash (I'm talking thousands of pounds) in stock which will take years/decades to recoup. I und...

This is an update. Roy has sent/is sending replacement parts out now - I received mine today. Fitting them is straight forward although getting the circlips to sit in the groove needed help (pressing with a 14mm socket, as suggested by Roy, was necessary every time). I've done under 1,600 miles sinc...

NLM sell their own exhaust nut spanner with not just one peg but which fits into half of the castellations. That should give you a really firm grip on the nut. Is the nut an original or one of these S/S nuts that some people are selling? S/S does not work well with aluminium as it galls & sticks...

Some years ago I got some spare keys from an ordinary locksmith in Bristol (he's since moved mind) but I did have the original.

Have you thought about asking anyone on the forum if they have the same number? Often there's not a lot of variation on locks.

Pete, two problems. First, The bobbins which hold the disc to the carrier were made from the wrong material & wear very quickly. Second, when the pads get very worn the metal tangs at the bottom (I've no idea what these are for) contact the bobbins. Roy is about to send out replacement kits but ...

Tom, thanks for your comments. I'd still be interested in views on how much ignition can slow up performance. Given that the cam is timed correctly & marked with an "S", the pistons look properly lumpy, the ignition is timed to the marks why does the bike feel slow? Have I got somethin...
