Re: Tappet Clearances
Thanks Robin for the clear and gentle explanation. I've obviously been spending too much time in the office or fiddling with two-strokes and had forgotten basic four-stroke theory. Armed with your explanation, I now realise that luckily I had adjusted the clearances at TDC on each cylinder's respect...

Tappet Clearances
Hello All, I got round to doing some winter maintenance on my '75 Strada today. The tappet clearances on the rear cylinder were easy enough to adjust but I just couldn't get the clearances right on the front cylinder. With the flywheel mark in the right place, I adjusted them to .1mm and then rotate...

Re: Exhaust Heat Shield
Here are some photos of the new NLM exhaust heat shields. They are a significant improvement on the previous tubular steel item (also pictured) which NLM supplied. Having not yet seen an original heat shield close up,I would be interested in peoples' views on whether the NLM item is a close approxim...

Re: Exhaust Heat Shield
Yes, the fleabay item looks like the NLM heat shield.
I've fitted mine. It's a big aesthetic improvement on the previous item NLM sold. I will post a photo of it in situ in a day or two.

Re: Exhaust Heat Shield
Hello All, Given the scarcity of original exhaust heat shields (I've been searching for one for nearly a year without success), 350/500 owners might want to know that NLM have just had some replacement exhaust shields made in stainless steel. They sell for £25. I've ordered one and will post a photo...

Lost Electrics
Hello All, Went (as a spectator) to the Classic Bike Sprint at North Weald Airfield today. Some nice classic metal in action but no Morinis as far as I could see. SS 1/4 mile times for the classics ranged from 10 seconds through to the mid 20s so perhaps I'll give it a go for a bit of fun next year....

Re: Front Fork Oil Level
Thank you again Paul and Jon for that very useful information. I have a light touch so am not guilty of grabbing the front brake. I'm also not much bigger than the average 1970s Italian youth. I will experiment with different oil levels and viscosities in the first instance to see if the dive effect...

Re: Front Fork Oil Level
Thanks for the feedback guys. The existing oil level is 400mm from the top of each fork tube which means it is level with the top of the slider and the mudguard. In other words the springs don't sit in any oil. Does this sound about right or on the low side? The forks feel pretty soft - there is a f...

Re: Front Fork Oil Level
Thanks for your response Mark. As the bike was very recently built by a reputable dealer, I'm hoping in the first instance to simply check the fork oil levels by measuring from the top of the fork tube. Can anyone confirm the procedure for checking the existing oil level in situ? Thanks in advance, SS

Front Fork Oil Level
Hello All,
Can anyone tell me the recommended oil fill level for a Strada's forks?
I appreciate that the manual indicates 200cc of oil is required per leg but I'm hoping to simply check and if necessary, top up the legs without draining the existing oil.
Thanks in advance.

Dumb Question re Speedometer
The speedo on my newly acquired '75 Strada is a thing of beauty but only marked in kmh. Using a portable GPS unit I have now calibrated it i.e. I know what speed it reads when the bike is actually moving at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 mph etc. My question is: Is it a simple job to remove the glass in order t...

Re: Exhaust Heat Shield
By way of an update, NLM don't have any stock of original exhaust heat shields. In the end I bought one of NLM's remade 'half' shields, cut it down to size so now have one and half of these fitted. Between them they do the job but I will continue searching for an original shield. In the meantime I s...
