Mine is the modern plastic one so I think it is quite a bit different.

Inside the actual throttle housing there is something that stops the throttle tube going too far when the throttle is closed.
If it goes too far the cables can come out of the throttle tube.
Whatever it is is missing from mine, it must have broken off sometime in the past.

This is probably going to sound like a stupid question but I haven't had a right hand gear change since 1977.
Is it still first down, rest up?
