Panic over. Inspired by Mr Comptons Youtube contributions, a sharp tap, several actually, did the job. Naturally the kick start mechanism exploded all over the floor, but all looks perfect. Next question; why does the freewheel mechanism not disengage properly? (clattering when engine runs)

I'm recommissioning a 500 Strada that I've owned for nearly 20 years but not used for the last 5. The kickstart isn't disengaging properly, so set about digging it out to diagnose/address, but I cannot figure out/remember how to crack the left hand side engine cover off.
