Front Sprocket - What are we using?

Post by BumbleBee »

Hi Guys,
I already have some answers locally but I thought I'd ask people who are running the 500, so a quick question to the masses;
What are we using for front sprockets? and where are we buying them?

Not a huge choice for them. Mdina stock them at a reasonable price (must be-because that's where I got mine. 14t standard and no room for bigger, if you want to change the ratio it is probably easier to get a choice in rear sprockets. I think 13t was available for the 500 and certainly is for the 350.

For the 500/250T I´ve never seen another one than 14 teeth

As Steve says, there is no room for more teeth. And even if you want to mount an endless chain, you have to put it on the sprocket before puting the sprocket on the axle :wink: Therefore it is dificult to get an endless chain off, because there is no room for an extractor/puller, when the chain is on. Several times I had to cut an endless chain with the radial to take it off. Therefore since years I only use chains (my experience the best ones:DID) with clip locks. Riding 501 with 14/39.

Is the 500 front sprocket the same as the 501 front sprocket? (I mean apart from one being 530 width and the other 520 width).
What is the Morini part number?

I don´t know the part number. But yes, the front sprockets for 250T, 500 and 501 are the same. 250T and 500 share the same gearbox with 5 gears, the 501 has 6 gears. I would try to find a 520 Kit.

The 530 back sprocket is stamped 1022 - 45 they are available new. Not sure about what would be stamped on the front one, nothing stamped on the one I'm looking at. Do you have any numbers visible on the 520 versions, they will be different I think?

I've found the part numbers for the 530 and 520 front sprockets, but nobody seems to have any available. Unless you know different.

Have you spoken to Doug at Mdina? It’s not been that long since I put new sprockets (520) on my 501 dart, so if he doesn’t have them I don’t doubt he can get them in if you ask. Part number for a 14 tooth 520 splined front sprocket (for 500/501) is M190139. You will also need a stop ring for the inside groove in the sprocket if you don’t have one.

Regarding 520 vs 530, I see no reason to not fit 520 chains on a Morini. Perfectly strong enough and you can use an o or x ring chain without worrying about the width.

For what it’s worth I’ve been using DID 520 ERVT chains on both my 350 sport and 501 dart and have been happy with them. Quite light and narrow and well up to the job

What Tom says above. 520 has a higher breaking strain than 530 and weighs less too. If it's a decent branded version it will have no more drag than a standard chain (once warmed up) and yes, Mdina have them as I bought them for my Camel too. If you want to alter the gearing look first at the rear sprocket.

Thanks for the help. May have to wait a bit, Mdina are temporarily out of stock of new 520 (and 530) fronts, and on the phone he said he's trying to source some new ones. The used ones he has, he said are not good. Wondering where he would get them from :D
