26 vs 28

Post by hombre »

Hi all, I am working on a 500 Camel and have a 501-engine with 28 mm carbs. I want to use the original airbox - for the 500 that is - and wonder if the rubbers that go from carb to airfilterhouse will fit. I recall the outer sizes for 26 PHBH and the 28 PHBH are the same? Anyone can confirm that before I start looking for those rubbers?

Hi, I currently have a 501 engine in a 500 Camel using the 500 air box, rubber connection etc. No problems with the connecting rubbers as the carbs are the same diameter
Initially the engine wouldn't rev out until I fitted smaller 42 pilot jets plus larger 125 main jets and now runs very well.

Trust this helps, take care and have fun, Ian

It also works with the original filterhousings in the street models (500 or 350) using the elbows of the 500.

Thanks Norbert.
I saw those elbows on startgomma.com for 350 and 500 and they both have an MM 38 marking, but to my knowledge they are different right?

They are different!
- The "tube" of the 26 and 28 is the same diameter 42 mm and need the 500 elbows.
- The diameter of the 25 (350) is smaler, don´t remember it exactly

If you mean me:
Rocinante has a Camel 501 "R" motor, obviously with a L5 II cam.
Dulcineas Motor is a mix of parts from diferent 501 motors with a Chopper "C" Housing, the smaler round Camel cilinders (because I like them better and wanted the whole bike as slim as posible) and a L5 cam.

Allthough there was a lot of work spent on Dulcineas motor lightening connecting rods, pistons, valve train, primary and clutch the old "R" from Dulcinea with about 90.ooo km (changing the piston rings and the main left bearing one time) revs better and is faster, obviously because of the cam. At lower revs Dulcineas motor works smoother. But it´s also dificult to compare because of diferent exhausts and airfilters.
Both are runnig well and have significant more punch than a 350 or 500 :P

Thanks Norbert, I remember your bike from Morano, very nice!

But I did indeed wanted to know if Ian's jet setting was for the L5- or J-cam

Sorry Hombre, my 501 engine is from a Coguaro and I spent a long time getting it to rev out and run well.
Initially I tried different air filters, opened up the exhaust and bought new jets etc.
Finally no filters and 130 main jets gave a starting point to work from.
Eventually I established there were no problems using the standard air box and the exhaust system I have.

The settings for my 28mm carbs are
Pilot 42 (from 55)
Main 125 (from 76)
Starter 50
Needle X18 2nd groove
Slide 40
Atomizer BC246
Float valve 250

Have fun, Ian

PS The 501 has is running the 500 Camel's ignition and charging systems.
