camel kickstart mechanism
camel kickstart mechanism
my camel was hard to start , i decided to have a look , and the kickstart cog is missing one tooth!
no wonder...
easy , go to the pile of junk, fit a 350 cog , but wait, they are different!
the 350 one has 20 teeth, the 500 camel came with a 19 teeth cog.
anybody knows if they are interchangeable?
and if not , on what other bikes the 19 teeth cog has been used?

Re: camel kickstart mechanism
ok , a update , i had a early 500 engine lying around , stripped that one , and found...... a 22 tooth cog!
this turns out to be more complicated than expected.

Re: camel kickstart mechanism
A few years ago I tried to figure out some of the diferences of the spare parts from the 350, 500 and 501 motors. Acording to the kickstart pinions I found out:
20 teeth: 350
19 teeth: 500/501 6-gear
23 teeht: 500 and 250 Single 5 gear
You can not interchange these pinios of the kckstarter mecanism beetween them because the pinions on the primary axle are diferent. The rest of the mecanism should be the same, although there are slightly diferences with the "helocial" (?) teeth. I don´t think that this has to do with the models, it seems to depend on production changes. You have to look for a pair that fits the best.
good luck

(some other results like pushrods etc. you can find here http://ital-web.de/forum/viewtopic.php? ... sc&start=0 in the 4th posting of the first page there is a kind of resumen. It´s in german of corse, but I guess you will see what it´s about, if not, just ask )

Re: camel kickstart mechanism
... senior moment. I sold the bits in February! Sorry.
Re: camel kickstart mechanism
that is a pity , thanks anyway....
Re: camel kickstart mechanism
ok , so the 19 tooth sprocket is not available any more.
i tried the obvious suppliers , nothing available new or used
slightly frustrated i tried the 20 tooth sprocket, and it seems to fit perfectly
so that is what is fitted now.
i've still got some issues with the charging system, but that should be solved with some parts i ordered
one more question , what air filter should be fitted to a early camel?
mine seems to be fitted with a 350 airbox?
i remember the road going 500 having a bigger airbox?

Re: camel kickstart mechanism
ok , so i might have a airbox coming ,
but i know why the 350 airbox was fitted in the first place.
the camel came to me fitted with a 1976 350 tank
i got the original tank too.
the previous owner removed it in the eighties because it had dissolved and was leaking.
fitting the 500 air filter under the 350 tank is not going to work, and the 350 tank looks out of place anyway.
chances of finding a steel tank are pretty slim,
The easiest way out is probably coating the inside of the original tank.
the best solution is finding a old rusty 500 tank , cut it up and use the bottom to make a new steel camel tank.
i see a major project coming.....

Re: camel kickstart mechanism
My Camel has a steel road tank, channeled each side for the fork legs when it is on full lock. Seems to fit OK, Got individual filters underneath - possibly what are begin described here as the flowerpot type.
