175 Turismo oil filter

Post by jonjim »

Hi, I'm pleased to report that after many months endeavour I've finally got the engine to run on my 175 Turismo - the first time I've experienced this
since I bought it in Italy many years ago. It sounds healthy and I'm keen to progress now to getting it into rideable condition asap. So, first priority
is to change the engine oil and clean the filters. But, having removed the sidecover to access the internal filter I've found that the two slot-headed screws
that hold the cover onto this filter are incredibly tight and, despite reasonable efforts with my impact screwdriver they are reluctant to being undone. I'm loath
to apply excessive force to such venerable alloy in this area. Despite its age (59 years) the engine does not show signs of previous mechanics' abuse !
Does anyone here think that I should persist in getting this filter to bits ? I have cleaned the other (lower) one but there wasn't much inside to clean out
anyway. I'd greatly value the opinion of those on this forum who have more experience of such situations please. Thanks in anticipation !

This is the main filer, the other is just a pickup strainer, it really needs to be clean.

If you take the carrier plate off, I think you should be able to hold it in soft jaws in a vice. I'd use an impact screwdriver bit on the end of an extension bar and turn it with a ratchet or breaker bar. Chilling the alloy with some freezer spray might help too.

Thanks for your prompt advice.
Following it, I removed the support plate and tackled the cover with an impact screwdriver bit. Both the screws obligingly snapped off
below their heads, just level with the turret casting that they screw into ! But I'm glad I opened up this gunge-infested filter chamber - muck of ages past residing therein.
The double-gauge gauze filter in there seats against a felt gasket ? I can't see a felt gasket like that in my gasket kit - do people re-use the old one or is there some
modern material superior to felt available I wonder ? Any recommendations as to where I can source a couple of new screws for the cover - I assume they are M6
threaded ?
Again, thanks in anticipation.

You can find those screws in Germany. These guys carry them in kits. http://www.ebay.it/sch/schrauben-profi/ ... pg=&_from= I have a very old hardware store near me that also carries them. My 250cc has the same problem. Along with many other problems....
