Chain Tension

HI all
Can anyone tell me how to test the chain tension on a Mk1 Camel (or any other of the off road bikes for that matter).
i.e. How much slack? on the centre stand or with someone sat on the bike? Where in the chain run to test the slack?
Also, what am i supposed to do with the chain guide that is attached to the brake steady arm? In what way should this be adjusted?
The restoration will be finished soon and I will post some pics on here.
