Newbie with a kanguro

Post by james fordham »

Hello,
Just picked up my second Morini (First one was a Strada 15 years ago). Now very much in to off road riding and have just picked up a Kanguro X1. The bike was bought by a friend 15 years ago at the Netley Marsh Bike jumble from some Italian guys. Its unregistered and has no paper work but all the numbers are clear (anyone suggest a vehicle dating service?).
It was in good condition and running until some toe rag stole it and ragged around the local woods, fell off it and broke the throttle and dumped it in a ditch.
My friend got the bike back a week later but was disheartened and also had 12 other Italian bikes waiting restoration so the Morini sat in the back of the shed for the last 15 years.
I have had the engine running and it sound ok. The rear shock has blown and it all got damp and crusty.
Any help with the shock and parts would be greatly appreciated.
The Morini also shares the garage with 1990 Husky WRK260 and Bultaco trials bike.
James

You won't be able to register it until you have a NOVA (Notification Of Vehicle Arrival) declaration via Customs and Excise.

They now apparently have a special service for doing this and it might take less than the 18 months that was apparently the backlog for paper applications.

I had seen Nova mentioned elsewhere. It is a concern. Has any one else had experience of this?
Has anyone used these guys?

OK, lets have a go at this.

People were bringing in new or nearly new vehicles from the EU without paying VAT. The NOVA system is suposed to stop them (que hysterical laughter!).

There is no VAT payable on old or used (over 6000 km) vehicles from within the EU, but you still have to go through NOVA.

If you have EU registration details, or the details of the EU vendor, you can submit the aplication online having registered yourself for VAT services (easy to do).

If, as in this case and so many others, you don't have such details, then you have to submit a paper application (ask C&E for from NOVA1) along with a written explanation.

Where the ORIGINAL manufacturer still exists, they must supply the dating evidence.
Are you listening DVLA staff? Hinkley Triumph have as much to do with Merriden Triumph as the German bra company do!

NO MORINI FACTORY RECORDS SURVIVE Assuming any proper records were even kept of course!

NLM have assembled a timeline based on frame numbers of bikes with known history from new and a number of other sources.

The comany above are not going to be interested in machines that have been in the UK for years and where there is no current manufacturer to get data from. At best they'll turn you down, at worst they'll charge money before telling you it can't be done. If you personally imported a 1 year old Guzzi with paperwork from France for example, it would be easy to do it all on-line and you'd have no need to pay anyone anyway.

Stewart at NLM sorted the NOVA on two bikes I'd previously had from him, but not yet registered (he now charges for this). I sorted one myself on-line with information obtained from the UK company I'd bought it from. They have apparently put staff in place to deal with the paper applications, but search the C&E website for the latest guidance notes.

I did register a trials bike at our local office last year with a date letter MOT and insurance. For type approval I used competition exempt. I think I will get all the information I can Date letter MOT and anything else I can lay my hands on and take my chances at the local DVLA office (Portsmouth). that's if they haven't closed it by them!
It's all a bit of a grey area by the sound of things.
Worst case I will just wait for a frame with a log book to come up.
Thanks for the advise.
I am looking forward to getting on the road and attending a few club events.

The NOVA rules came into force on April 12th this year.

All vehicle registration is now done at Swansea.

That would explain why I had no problems with the Bultaco as that was March this year. DOH
All I can do is work through the process and hope for the best.
Anyone got a frame with a UK log book?

HI Dave,
I am at Chandlers Ford, so not to far from you. I had heard there shutting the Portsmouth office. Real shame as Swansea are a nightmare on the phone etc. It was so much easier just to pop in and speak to some one face to face. Will keep you posted of progress.

My Husky is ready to MOT and the same situation i.e. no paper work or NOVA. I will report back with my progress. For Now the Morini is going on the back burner till I know where I stand on this issue.

I did try this guy at Bristol and he's come up trumps. With the Nova clearance certificate, dating certificate and completed V55 for my 1989 Husky.
All I have is the invoice for the bike from eBay.
I believe that registered agents can carry out the NOVA process on line. Whole procedure has taken 3 weeks.
Next step is MOT and insurance on the Frame number and I am on the road.
Just hope I have the same luck with my Morini! :D
