newbie and a 501 Camel

Post by elektrobank »

Hi all!

My name is Gianluca, i live in Napoli, Italy and i'm owner of a morini 501Camel 86'

this is my first experience with a bike i'm doing some practice and i really like to drive it in the streets but now i'd like to fix some problems...

my first problem is to source the parts...
the gearbox is a little bit ruined i think... i find not easy to change the speeds... i'd like to change the oil but i really don't know what kind of oil i'll need and the last.... there is no electric loom on the bike... i can only shut off the engine if i put in the first speed and hold the brake

any help??

Thanks to everyone in advance...
and please help me to keep alive my 501

A common cause of a poor gear change is a dragging clutch. Check that out first.

If you use a 10W40 semi synthetic oil (Morini specified Agip SINT 2000 on late bikes) you won't go far wrong.

I don't know much about the wiring on the off road bikes, but there are diagrammes out there on the web.

Hi, welcome to the group. Regarding oil change I have attached a link to the service manual, it covers all engines from 125-500 so should be useful.

Regarding wiring, I have discarded my original wiring and will be rewiring with new wires. But a quick way to stop your engine is to fit a switch to the green wire that connects to both the ignition ht coils or transducers, this will cut the power fed from the engine to the ht coil/transducers.

In picture immag015 you should be seeing +12v on the brown (+12v) and blue wire (ground/earth). However it is very likely your Camel has the 6v/12v system my kanguro had. This was, I understand, due to battery size issues. They had the alternator deliver +12v for the headlamp and then +6v for all the other electrics and battery. So you might only see +6v on the brown wire. Check the wires coming from the alternator as I would expect there should be a red wire as well. Initially check resistance across yellow & grey wire. The run engine and check voltage (AC) across grey and yellow wire. Then connect yellow/grey wire and check for output across brown and blue wire of either 6 or 12v (DC).
I initially converted my 6v/12v alternator to 12v and then not being happy with the resistance rewired the alternator to a conventional 350 spec, however I ended up with the same resistance. So the conversion is all you should need to do, it is at the following link:-
http://www.motomoriniclub.nl/6-Volt-conversion.pdf

The item shown in immag017 I do not recognise, I did not have this on my bike. Could be a relay or some sort of load resistor.
Your bag of dead wiring looks similar to my old wiring, on my rebuild I am using BMW K75 handlebar controls so also bought a wiring loom from a BMW K -series as a basis for a new wiring loom.
Good luck and keep us updated.
