Timing Marks

Post by NMPete »

Hi - I have an '82 500 SEI-V and am having trouble with sluggish starting. Thought I'd check the timing (starting feels like it may be a bit too advanced) and found the following marks on the "flywheel" :
- DM5.2 (Is it PM%.2?)
- ANT.1
- DM5.1 (Is it PM5.1?)

What does each mark indicate and how do I check timing at starting speed?

Thanks
New Mexico Pete

Hi Pete,

You should have PMS 1 and PMS 2 which are top dead centre for front and rear cylinders.

ANT 1 is the advance timing mark for the front cylinder.

Did you remove the side casing or peer through the slot at the top?

Timing is statically set on the other side. Remove the cover on the end of the camshaft and inside there is an arrow on the left and a mark. If you remove the rotor make sure it goes back in the same position and not 180 degrees out. Check ignition timing dynamically.
