What is the correct Regulator for 500

Postby Griffo » 14 Feb 2010 06:39

I have a 500 six speed, the 1st model. I think 1982. I would like to know if I have the correct regulator or is it from a 78 model. How do I check this?? I currently have Ducati Electronica 3444212 12V 12A. It looks like "I 20" stamped above that.
Thanks

Hi Griffo,
If nobody replies before weekend I'll look under the tank of my 81 six speed Strada to check the numbers out

Thanks John,
If your regulator has a blue (earth) wire in it, or a red wire would be helpful too
Cheers,

I have a 1984 registered 500-6 but I'm pretty sure its a 1982 model.

It has the same numbers on the regulator (344212 12v 12A and I20)
2 terminals marked G have a yellow wire
+B has a red wire and
C has a brown wire.

there is a blue earth wire on one side.

Hi Griffo,
Just to confirm my Strada has the same 3444212 12v 12a regulator with 2 yellow wires, 1 red wire to B+ and 1 brown wire, there are a number of blue wires using the regulator fixing bolts as earth points.

Hey thanks John,
I am trying to track my charging problem. The guy who I bought the bike from as a wreck liked to fiddle and crash bikes. He also had a '78 500 strada that was a wreck. I will just keep trying, then give it to an electrician to sort I guess.
Cheers

Some notes about Morini regulators.

They won't charge a battery that is too flat.

They won't charge if the regulator isn't seeing battery voltage via the switched line from the ignition switch.

In the case of the split phase alternator it's possible to have a pattern of weak magnets in the rotor that will allow the bike to run fine, but not charge.
