3 1/2 stator wanted
3 1/2 stator wanted
In amongst your rocking horses, has anyone a working stator for my 1983 strada?
Please.
Mine is at NLM but there seems to be a problem with getting it fixed and I'm looking for a way out, before NLM wind up. No pun intended.
Rob has been most helpful, you know it wont work without one so I don't want to be left stranded.
It needs to be rewound.
Thanks.

I've never used them for a Morini but West country Windings have done a couple of jobs for me OK (Gilera and Rotax).

I''l try them if I don't achieve a fix at NLm.

Re: 3 1/2 stator wanted
Rob from NLM will be sending my Stator back as the company who? (west country rewinds) don't do them anymore.
I rang West country and they confirmed that it was taking them too long to complete so it wasn't worth it.
Interestingly I rang Rex's speed shop and they tell me that they used to get rewinds from West country to do for them.
Round and round springs to mind.
Thanks to all for the information.......

Hi George, does that mean you're getting it back un-repaired? What was the story with Rex's rewinds too, were they in a position to fix them? I do have a selection of stators but I think all of them are at least slightly suspect. The most annoying being the one where I'd just replaced the ignition soured coil with one of those Indian Lambretta items. Great Ohms reading and lovely spark/running with a remagnetised flywheel. Then within 100 miles the blooming charging coils failed! Took me ages to locate the break and even longer to solder the gap.
I'd be interested to know of a good rewind service as it's something I'm a bit too ham-fisted for.

Bad news. I expect there other places that can do the bobbin rewinding but you might have to remove and replace the bobbin yourself rather than a one stop shop service.
Perhaps Dave Lindsley, Tony Cooper or one of the other magneto specialists might do it?

Hi George,
Long time no hear. Hope all is well...
Try Robson and Francis.

I'd be interested in confirmation that the Lambretta coils work OK. I rewound one myself a few years back (see article in www.motomoriniclub.nl). It wasn't difficult, just a bit time consuming. The hardest thing is finding the coil former.Steve Brown wrote:...I'd just replaced the ignition soured coil with one of those Indian Lambretta items. I wouldn't use a complete Vespa coil. It has too many turns, you might put the capacitor in the ignition box at risk (rated at around 300v).
I've used the bobbin to wind a new coil. It was a little slimmer than the original bobbin (and there are at least three bobbin sizes) and needed a spacer.

Re: 3 1/2 stator wanted
Hi all who have contacted me about this.
It's much appreciated.
I've spoken to Rexs Speed shop and they tell me that West Country Rewinds used to send them the stator coils to rewind.
So after chatting to the gent who will be doing the work I've opted to send it to them. Around 90 for the ignition coil and 75 for a lighting coil.
I'll let you know the outcome. I need my 3 1/2 for a special trip early May, so I might even ask to borrow the club bike as I've invested to go on this jaunt.
Many thanks to you all.

Re: 3 1/2 stator wanted
Hi Paul, I didn't check what the voltage out was with the Indian coil, only the resistance of the coil. It was a good figure but not as high what I'd have thought to be too high. e.g. more than 220 ohms and less than 270 ohms From vague memory). So the voltage output wouldn't be too high from that would it?EVguru wrote:I wouldn't use a complete Vespa coil. Glad yours is being sorted George, can I ask if that price is per individual coil?

Re: 3 1/2 stator wanted
The example I received was nearer 500 ohm and was wound with very fine wire. A resitance of around 450-550 ohm is mentioned on Vespa Forums.Hi Paul, I didn't check what the voltage out was with the Indian coil, only the resistance of the coil.
