Electrics

Post by Onecos »

I posted last in January. At that time I had turned the key on my 1981 2C and filled the air with smoke. The next day I crashed my Buell and broke my wrist. I'm fine now and want to fix the 2C. It appears that one of the transducers cooked off. Interestingly I have a US made voltage regulator in place. Right now I'm thinking the best thing I could do is install an aftermarket electronic ignition. Replace everything. I've read about success with the Lucas RITA ignition. Aside from Lucas being the Prince of Darkness, it seems that this ignition hasn't been produced since 2004. Any suggestions? I'm open to anything to get the 2C back in action.

The standard stuff works just fine when in good condition. Some of the aftermarket systems are wasted spark, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but the wasted spark for the front cylinder fires on the rear and vice versa. Damaged pistons have been reported!

I would suspect that someone has been playing with the wiring on your bike. The 2C incorporated a diode to prevent a faulty ignition switch from applying battery voltage to the ignition circuit (which will burn the transducers out).

I make up my own transducers and use CDI coils from scooters. The circuit diagram (checked against an original) is on my website.
