Early starter motor

Post by Michael S »

Help please
I am rebuilding the gearbox of an early starter motor on my 3 1/2 and need to remove/replace the phosphor bronze gear.
Which way does it have to be pressed/driven?

If adjacent bearing is removed already then the keyed bronze gear can be pressed or driven off that end of the shaft. The exploded diagram p28.1 in the blue book should help.

Additionally, Paul Compton's excellent starter-motor videos on YouTube are compulsory viewing.

Dear all
I seem to have got myself in a muddle; partly because I am over loaded with Voluntary activities
Is there someone whole can take my box of bits (motor and its gearbox) and put them back together? Quotes please

Have a word with Paul Compton (aka EVGuru). He did those instructional videos and also did a lot of repairs for other people. I'm not sure if he's still taking on work though, so remember to ask nicely! Also listed in ATG as technical guru.
