Exhaust heat shield

Post by George 350 »

Hi all,

Hot on the heels of Bruce's unfortunate side panel loss, I have to report that my exhaust heat shield finally succeeded in gaining freedom today after 44 years in custody.
So everybody with a little vee, make sure that not only are the side panel screws tight (and with rubber washers on them!), but that your heat shield screws are tight as well.

Meanwhile, I'm off to see if I can find some rocking horse poo - got to be easier than finding another heat shield....
Regards,
George

I have had thd mountings come loose but caught it in time.I use a bit of loctite now. As it runs hot I do not know if that really works.

Not as good as the original ones but you can get generic ones on ebay for little more than a fiver that clamp on with hose clips. Saves burning holes in your trousers/ boots whilst you hunt the unicorn.

Exhaust heat shield-Resolved

Post by George 350 »

WooHoo!

One rainy day in early September, I was perusing ebay Austria (of all places) and a slightly rusty and once black painted heatshield of the right style I was looking for came up. At a 'buy it now' price of €32, it quickly became mine, but a further €21 for shipping made it less of a bargain. Still, needs must and a few days later it was here.
Of course the mounting holes had worn 'keyhole shaped' and £10 was spent with the welding man to rectify this.
With everything smoothed off, it was off to the platers, and today it was back - [img]https://www.imagebam.com/view/MEFU1MN [img].
So, todays lesson is that 'rocking horse poo' can be found, but can cost almost £90 an item! And no, the countersinks are all shiny - the marks are just reflections. Here's hoping that this one will stay put going forward.

Regards,
George.

I put loctite on the mounting screws. Given the heat this may not be the best but far so good.

Yes, spring washers will do, and add a bit of copper paste to the thread

I´ve made a heat shield (for a 500 pipe, that is not so curvy at the top) of an an aluminum carpet strip. I need it also as a stop for the brake pedal, so made it a bit stronger at the bottom end. Not original but it works

Better loose a side panel or heat shield than a kicker level!

I need to extend my original heat shield to make a stop, thank you for sharing, I will copy it. Where do I send the royalties? Or would you prefer wood to keep the house warm?

I lost a kick start lever once, as recounted in another thread... found it again, luckily.
