350 Kick Starts - last one sold at Mdina Italia

Morning All,

Friend of mine just bought the last remaining kick start pedal from Mdina Italia. Unless anyone knows of an alternative source, looks like they are going to be scarce.

Anyone know of an alternative supplier?

Specifically, the last swan neck for a r/set Sport. I’m making enquiries with a friend in the classic restoration business about making a better alternative for sports wirh r/sets. If there’s any appetite out there it would be good to know as he could produce limited runs. Certainly it’s a part that is a problem going forward if yours is worn

They do appear to be getting scarce. I got a brand new one about 4 years ago from eBay.it
EBay.de may be worth a look. No idea how much it now costs to send to England.

I would be very interested in a better kickstart for a Sport with rearsets.

I’ll have a chat and relay anything useful. The main problem will be the knuckle with the splines. Forging a part would be ridiculously pricey but maybe we can find a kick start from another more numerous bike that could be modified. Watch this space!

eBay Germany and Italy are very good sources but there is nothing there at the moment. Unfortunately my kick start came off on a ride without me noticing so I can’t wait for one to turn up!

My Sport came with what looked like a 1980s Honda kickstarter. Might be worth having a look as it fitted perfectly.

Not Honda but could be Yamaha, 1960's bike had left side kickstart.

Ok.. The fold out bit is relatively simple to make/ do, but the knuckle is a different matter.

So what other bikes had a left hand side, clockwise rotation, kickstart?
As said above, 1960's Yamaha 250/350s,
Suzuki 200/250/500 twins prior to 1978
MZ's (well, almost all DKW copies)
CZ's (but that was also a gear lever as well)
All Ducati bevel singles
MV 250/350's
Various other small firm Italian bikes
Various non BMW German bikes
Honda C/CB72/77's had a r/h kickstart that kicked forwards (so clockwise rotation) as do/did
Scooters like Lambretta and Vespa which have/had r/h pedals that cranked clockwise.

Trouble is, from the above it is only the Suzuki and Yamaha that I can recall having 'bottom' hinged levers and what are the chances of the diameter or spline size/pitch matching? Anyone know of anything using the same spline size?

Maybe it is time to see if any of the Italian Morini club people know who actually made the part and/or if any drawings still exist for it
It's such a pity that the knuckle can fall off when the bolt becomes just loose as opposed to the bolt having to be completely removed due to it passing through a 'notch' on the kickstart shaft before the it can come off.

Additional bikes with left foot starting,:
The Spanish Bultaco and Ossa (pre 1980 ish.) Both designed/made most of their bikes with left hand kickstarts. Ossa's were also bottom hinged with a similar style of kickstart pivot as a Kanguru.

The sad thing about all of these bikes (apart from the fart boxes) is that none are what you could call common, and therefore finding parts to modify won't be easy.

Sometimes being a Morini owner can be tough...

The kickstarter of one of these spanisch bikes does fit on our shaft! Don´t remember which one, probably the Ossa. The thing ist that most of the Iberians don´t know that. If so it would be dangerous for us because they are in the same need as ourselves

Another one for your list of left foot kickers is the Rotax single as fitted to Armstrong MT500, Harley Davidson MT350 and various CCMs. No idea if the splines might be compatible but these are certainly less rare than an Ossa!
