New seat cover

Some years ago I bought a new seat cover from the most well-known outfit in the UK. I finally got it fitted last month. My upholsterer was - shall we say - less than impressed with the overall fit and it needed some remedial work. The logo rubbed off pretty much when you look at it and it faded from gold to silver in one sunny day. Raindrops seem to turn white on it then fade after a while, which is very odd.

Anyway, he did a great job considering what was there before - some mop-heads and a kitchen cloth! Amazing, but actually it wasn't that uncomfortable. I must have a resilient bottom.

I have such a seat unit.For some reason i have amassed three used seats, not one without some kind of damage. the original appears to be the hardest.Don't know what's under the cover.

All this K business has reminded me. What exactly is the correct mounting arrangement for the rear of the tank,i.e. with the single bolt? I had some kind of grommet in the frame when I got the bike but this was falling apart.I have tried a new grommet and indeed a 1 inch bath tap washer. I have had an issue with the tank resonating,so tried some foam as per insulating plumbing.A right old bodge. I have never seen another bike up close with this tank mount.

Mine uses a single nut and bolt with the nut at the top otherwise it can rub through where the seat cover touches.

I do have the grommet but also towards the rear of the tank, I have two bits of tubing left over from the crankcase breather wrapped round the frame (19mm id - 25mm od). They're 2cm long and sliced open lengthways. Rearranging/tidying the wiring around the steering head can also help the tank slip on and off the front end more easily. I can photograph this if you like but it may not be "correct", whatever that means.

So that resonating must be the humming I can hear while riding along At least it's nothing mechanically serious!

Thanks for the info-it sounds like I have it pretty similar.My main reason for asking is I had a small crack appearing throught the side of the rear mounting on one fuel tank I had.(That'll be easy to weld then) Luckily i have another.....i agree that the wiring and cable runs around the headstock can be problematic. i always check under my fuel tanks when they are off for witness marks as it's not unknown to get short circuits. I did manage to acquire a small roll of 3M Paint protecting film a long while ago and I use this between the tank and the seat.I also use the bike for occasional camping trips but find that tail unit does not make carrying stuff easy.I have now settled on some old throwover panniers with some sort of vecro strapping running under the seat.I keep eyeing up some stainless steel rod i have with a view to fabricating something but it hasn't happened yet.
Why don't i just use my old Beemers with PROPER panniers? Now if I can rig up a tank mounting like they use..............

Well, I contacted the supplier about the new seat cover I fitted earlier in the thread as it started holding water, obviously getting in through the stitching. They sent me another (gratis) but that is stitched as well.
Soooo ... before I shell out again to have another leaky cover fitted, has anyone else experienced this, or are there seat covers available elsewhere free of stitching?

Hi.
I think R K Leightons in Birmingham weld some seams which my otherwise have been stitched? they made and fitted a cover for a Benelli of mine,may be worth contacting them about what they could do for you! Their number is 0121 359 0514.

Stitched seat covers usually have a waterproof layer between the cover and the foam/padding.

These days it might be worth trying something like Tyvek.

It came from them in the first place and the replacement looks just the same but Leighton's did offer to send it without hesitation, which is great.

But really, all I want is a product fit for service especially as it can be a pain agreeing who pays when you need to return stuff from NZ. I will try the Tyvek when I fit this second cover.
