Starting technique

Post by tankstraddler »

On a different thread, Paul Compton wrote: "There is a definite starting technique. Bring it up to compression and kick it over compression and kick it fast. I find it helps to have the throttle just cracked open."
Does anyone have any tips of their own to add?
I moved to the Morini from a Triumph twin which I owned for 30 years and where a small opening of the throttle followed by a single kick worked most of the time. I have experimented with different throttle openings and blipping the throttle when kicking. I think I am kicking as hard as I can but I get the impression that the engine only fires when the kickstarter is at the very end of its travel so, in the same way that if you kick a football the swing doesn't end at the ball, there needs to be an intention to kick past the stop.
This post is really just about technique: there are plenty of others for starting difficulties linked to mechanical or electrical problems!

There all likely a little different but how I start mine is
get it so I can feel compression then just put the slightest
bit of throttle on and give it a swinging kick, it does not
need to be a almighty kick if it's going to start it does not
take much at all, this works even from stone cold no choke
but you have to be ready to keep it going for a few sec or
put a choke on to keep it running, from hot give it about half
throttle turn it over 2 or 3 times then with just the slightest touch
of throttle find compression and kick it over it will usually start
1st or second go.

Bike on centre-stand, front choke on, stand on RH passenger footpeg, swing with left foot with throttle a little open. Takes a while to master a left foot swing.
