Dart Exhaust

Anybody had an exhaust system made for their Dart? I am looking to have one made in stainless and wonder if there are any recommendations of manufacturers etc.

I do not have the time or equipment to make a decent job and would prefer to help an engineering company in these recessionary times.

I quite fancy a 2-2 with a balance pipe where the bulky collector box is. I know it will add weight,but there are some nice looking (and sounding) silencers around. (.....wonder if a pair of Termis would fit...thinking aloud, not being serious). The only sod I can see is the rear pipe exit from the rear cylinder, it is a bit tight to say the least.....

I know the setting up will be a chore, but think it would be worth it.

I am in the process of fitting a 2 into 2, remember unless your link pipes are going under the rear bodywork you will have to work out your prop stand position.

Carbon can company do a stubby end can which proportionally looks spot on on the dart. I'll try and dig out some pics of my dart with it fitted.

I suggest if you are going to have a system made you copy the lengths and diameters from an original 350 morini System or a known good aftermarket system. Once you have your lengths its then time to figure out how to route it all!

Hi MM,

I can reccommend Gazelle exhausts in Wales, they made a stainless system for my Guzzi although I did take the bike there to have it made. I have also used O&S stainless who made a one-off system for me. Both good quality stainless and a 10 year or lifetime guarantee.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I have found a place in Bratford who will also make an exhaust. I will also try the other people mentioned and when done I will post some pictures. I presume once one has been made it will be cheaper and easier to make another.......

Doesn't happen to be zorstek does it? If so then they've already seen a dart because they did a system for my 501 project a few years back. The price was good and they made it quickly, the reason I didn't mention them in my previous post was because I never got the bike running properly on that system. Probably not zorstek's fault to be fair, I asked them to make an exhaust system and that's exactly what they did but the front and rear pipes were quite different lengths and the diameter was quite big for a morini. Morini's are very sensitive to exhaust tuning so you have to get it right- that's why I said to copy the lengths and diameters of a proper morini system. And don't forget the extra length of pipe hidden in the silencer of the rear cylinder on a morini 2 into 2...

Don't let that put you off using zorstek as I was happy with the work they did at the time and I think if you were very specific about the lengths then they would do a top quality job. I think from memory I paid £350 but that was a few years back.

NLM made me a system in the end although that was eye wateringly expensive (best part of an immaculate triple disc sport) but I'm pleased with the work alex did.

About being cheaper and easier second time round- I'm not so sure because for one off systems they won't build a jig they will just cut and bend pieces to fit on the bike. I suppose once a routing has been proven then the figuring out is taken out of the equation but they'd still need to fit them to the bike second time round unless volumes were high enough to justify making a jig.

To make these as more than one offs, you'd need a jig, a reel and maybe a jitterbug!

Early Cagiva Freccia C9s have the silencers inside the rear bodywork with the pipes exiting either side of the rear light. Once I'd told Tom this, nothing would do except for him to do the same on his 501 Dart.

It comes in handy, along with the very tough carbon bodywork, when he drops it at track days.

Yes, Zorstec said they could do a system, I was thinking of something less complicated than the 501 exhaust, but with all the talk of pipe lengths etc, maybe a twin silencer on the right may be an option, like the newer Morinis, hmmm, 'weight / complication / will it work' balance required.....

Surely most of the Dart's boxes have rotted out by now or do people just patch them up?

I was asked to display my Dart at a show, but less than a week before the show the collector box split next to an old repair. When I took the system off to repair it, the silencer disintigrated too. Lacking suitable tubing to hand to make a Y piece, I made a new collector box out of steel sheet and also knocked up a new silencer. That was completely straight through with just a perforated tube (rolled out of flat sheet) with a couple of end caps and rockwool stuffing. Not too loud at all and a nice deep tone.

With an occasional dose of satin black it didn't look to bad. The new owner has fitted a nice shiny stainless silencer though.



Generally, the main system doesn't seem to rot too badly. A new collector box, in stainless if you wish, would sort things out rather than a complete new system.

EV is quite correct, it sounds and goes extremely well, and if any one wants a ballpark figure for a stainless collector box only, set aside £300+
