Re: Refurbishing threads
Thank you both for your insights, when I have the tappet blocks off I'll measure the pushrods and compare their lengths. I vaguely recall something about the pushrods being different lengths on the front and rear cylinders (which the Kanguro parts catalogue confirms). Anyone know what the official l...

Re: Refurbishing threads
Thankfully I've enough helicoils to do all the rocker studs as well as the tank mounts. Although if I have to do the rockers then something's amiss (or a previous owner/mechanic was ham-fisted). The tools have arrived, apart from the 3/8" drive tap. I'm holding off, partly as I've been busy ref...

Re: Pink coloured petrol != good petrol
More news on the tank and fuel. As I've mentioned in another post, I've removed the fuel tank so I can sort out the underside. I discovered someone had applied a cloth-based patch to an area on the RH that'd normally have a metal tang to help hold a chrome edging to the bottom edge of the tank. Whil...

Re: Refurbishing threads
As a quick update: The M7 helicoil kit arrived early yesterday and I drilled, tapped, and fitted the helicoil in the afternoon. This morning the bolts and washers arrived and fit both original and helicoiled threads (as expected). The fuel tank is off the bike so I can address rust and other mess un...

Re: Refurbishing threads
I'd neglected to answer your question - the treatment starts probably mid-late January for the cylinder head repair, I first want to order spare tappet cover and head gaskets and NLM are closed until around 3rd Jan (when I'll be in California for work). For the tank mount, it'll start tomorrow with ...

Re: Refurbishing threads
Mike, yes, last year I sold the Corsaro 1200 back to NLM, it's not a bike I want to service longer term - too many special tools and quite expensive. I then bought a K2 Kanguro which needed lots of repairs as long unused parts were brought screaming back into the land of the living - some died inste...

Re: Removing and replacing a steering lock
Oh, and the 'obvious' once you know - turn the lock anti-clockwise when trying to unlock it. But first aim at simply freeing up the pins and the rotation. You might find a thin flat-bladed screwdriver helpful by trying to fit it first one side, then the other of the bridge area (the tall bit at the ...

Re: Removing and replacing a steering lock
@mgelder The locksmith started with a can of WD-40 on my steering lock. I rotated between sprays to try and increase the chances of freeing up the lock e.g. mine (once removed) had lots of gummy grease which was restricting it's movement in the headstock. He wanted to free the pins in the lock so fo...

Re: Refurbishing threads
Thank you for your suggestions. Amazon.co.uk (I live in the UK) has M7 helicoil kits for £25 ish, eBay does have some but they're harder to track down and it's harder to confirm when the items would arrive from eBay. The M7 bolts are also available from online vendors, not from local stores AFAIK.

Refurbishing threads
Like many bikes, it turns out that my recently acquired 3 1/2 sport has various worn out or stripped threads. These include one for the tank mount which is an uncommon size of M7 diameter. Here's what I've found so far, I wonder what recommendations you have in terms of repairing and restoring these...

Re: Pink coloured petrol != good petrol
Thanks for the info about what the ghastly red coating might be & your perspective on it. My tank isn't leaking, the RH fuel tap does so happily most of the time. I've bought a new one to replace it and will do when I've ridden the bike enough to use more of the fuel in the tank. BTW: This bike'...

Re: Removing and replacing a steering lock
Thank you Paolo, so a 4mm one. I'll post an update once I've received and tried to fit the wider one. There's certainly a gap along the side of the bridge area over 1mm. The 4mm versions are easily available online for around £10 in the UK. I'l buy one of those if I can't get the wider one to behave...

Pink coloured petrol != good petrol
The cute 3 1/2 sport I bought had had the petrol tank 'treated'. The seller couldn't remember what product he'd used. Once I'd started riding the bike I noticed all sorts of running problems, possibly related to fuelling and/or jetting. I had a receipt for most of the jets being replaced. However Ro...

Obtaining spare ignition keys - a success story
Another minor experience was getting extra ignition keys cut. I only had one for the recently acquired 3 1/2 I first ordered a couple from Rob at NLM which arrived the next day, however they turned out to be slightly smaller and narrower in their cross-section than my lock. Thankfully my local locks...

Removing and replacing a steering lock
I've acquired a 3 1/2 sport, 1979 era with a single front disk and cast wheels. It seems the bike hadn't actually been ridden for years, and hadn't done more than 370 miles in the last 11 years. I've discovered this, and some flawed remedial work by previous owners, means I've got some work to do......
