I believe (and will almost certainly be corrected!) that the later engines developed less power. I think 35hp is the figure quoted. Do the cylinders have Gilardoni cast into them? See pic below of my 1990 Kanguro which has the Gilardoni cast into the barrels and the 500 from 1981 which doesn't. Look...

I would think less than a ton for a set of pads.... the last set I bought for a Brembo were about £20 a disc.

Use the correct specification oil - 10W60, JASO-MA, SAE- SJ->SL? Anything else and probably either have a slipping clutch or an expensive rebuild. Is it worth mucking around for a few quid each year?
