I have not deviated from the instruction in the Blue Book on the three occasions where I have had the barrels off since 2007. This on my K1.
Others may have a different opinion.
I reused my head gaskets last time around though.

Any progress adjusting the clutch actuating arm at the engine? I had to shorten an inner once following a new clutch pack installation.

Mine really improved with a decent AGM battery, a rebuild and new style clutch shoes. Mind you if I remove and then replace the cover it becomes recalcitrant until I have run the bike for a few miles. Must be a slight alignment issue I suppose.
