It makes no difference if I pull in the clutch or shift into gear. The noise gets faster if I rev the engine, though I didn't want to take that too far.

Is the correct chain for the 3 1/2 Sport a 530 with 96 links?
I found a reference to the chain for the Strada on the Dutch website but wondered if the Sport was the same since it has a bigger back hub.

Umm, are you removing the balance pipe, or the fuel pipe between the carbs? If a balance pipe is fitted, there are usually no vacuum take-off ports on the inlet manifolds and vice versa.
